Hi Guys,

Im in the process of building a diorama based on the extraction convoy used in the Battle of Mogadishu made famous by the film Black Hawk Down.

I know there were slant backs with .50 cals and Mk19 but after reading former Navy Seal Howard Wasdin's account he says he was in a cargo Humvee, no roof doors or windows, two seats front, two seats back and bench seats in the rear also with a .50cal mounted. is this something that anyone has seen or has pics of? it doesn't sound like the standard M998. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Jay

The HMMWV that Howard Wasdin is referencing would have been an M998 with an M6 Pedestal weapon mount. Essentially, it would have been a similar configuration to the current Academy M998 IED Guntruck kit. However, it would not have the gunshield or the armor. None of those items existed during BHD.

Check out the M6 Pedestal mount here:

The link just above is to a PowerPoint presentation.

Thanks Minuteman, this is what i was thinking but is it usual to have the rear seats installed and single bench seats in the rear? it sounds like he was taliking about a custom variant. Jay

It would be unusual to have the two front seats, two rear seats and then bench seats in the cargo area. Having said that, your Ranger Regiments and SF type units customize equipment all the time.

If you go to this link, it is page 2 of my M1038 HMMWV walk-around. It shows detail of the rear cargo bench seats.

Probably what they did was cut down the rear bench seats so that they stopped on top of the rear wheel wells.
